Fabric building III is the third approach to abandoned buildings within our city. Our aim is to give an alternative solution to facades of vacant, unused and structurally inadequate buildings, as well as stores that have been unused due to the social and economical crisis. A simple frame is being constructed. A net pattern will be formed within the frame using colored rope, wire or fibre optics depending on the acquired result. This way the community gets informed on the unoccupied spaces, and get engaged on participatory methods that will revitalize the neighborhood, and bring in social awareness. Vacant buildings and stores can be identified thus creating a new network of spaces that now have a new strong identity.
This way of urban activism will challenge us to various questions such as ,are the cities we have the cities we need?
At the same time ,by creating spaces in the city that nurture social interaction, we add a touch of magic to mundane places and situations.
FABRIC BUILDING III
1. Approaching owners of vacant buildings or stores in order to take admission and bring them along to participate in this project. We
choose together the materials that will form the net pattern that will be placed in front of their spaces.
2. A network is being created of vacant spaces that now have a strong identity. They are now new spaces within the urban fabric of our
city and show a unity in character.
3. People can bring along new ideas of ways that these spaces can be now used.
A city can be open to surprise and design can be an important tool in inspiring engagement in public. By planning such an usual experience, we tap into the unlimited potential for joy and transformation in the urban environment. Seen from the corners of the streets surrounding, these façades give a new look to the abandoned buildings and convert them into public spaces alive in the city!! Social awareness is being raised and the community is being drawn to participate into an urban activism within the city fabric. In a functional, future city, the local municipality and other authorities should embrace alternative ways of seeding the city’s prosperity and help in any way possible, private initiative that will result in a social, more sustainable way of living.
